Oregon Veteran Surfing
Objective: The primary goal of the Oregon Veteran Surfing Project was to implement surfing events and ocean therapy sessions for veterans, focusing on outreach and community-building. With the help of several grants totalling $70,000 over three years, the project aimed to leverage the therapeutic benefits of the ocean to support veterans' mental health and foster a sense of camaraderie and belonging.
Background: Many veterans face challenges in adjusting to civilian life, often carrying the psychological impacts of their service, such as PTSD and moral injury. Traditional therapeutic approaches may not fully resonate with or meet the unique needs of all veterans. Recognizing this gap, the Oregon Veteran Surfing Project was developed to offer an alternative form of therapy that combines the physical activity of surfing with the healing properties of the ocean, promoting mental well-being and social connection among veterans.
Methodology: The project encompasses a series of structured activities, including two Oregon Veteran Surf Leadership Camps, one Oregon Campout, one West Coast Veteran Surf Leadership Camp, 16 outreach events, and weekly surf meetups in both Newport and the Oregon North coast. These events are designed not only to introduce veterans to surf therapy but also to create a supportive community where they can share experiences and build relationships. The initiative also extends its reach by building a network of veteran surf nonprofits throughout California, facilitating a broader community of support and engagement.
Significance: The Oregon Veteran Surfing Project is significant for several reasons:
Alternative Therapeutic Approach: It offers an innovative form of therapy that combines physical activity with the natural healing environment of the ocean, providing a complementary option to conventional mental health treatments for veterans. Veterans have experienced the uncoupling of fear and life-threat, building a connection between fear and awe.
Community and Network Building: By creating a series of events and meetups, the project fosters a sense of community among veterans, reducing isolation and promoting mutual support. The establishment of a network with other veteran surf nonprofits further amplifies the impact of this initiative.
Enhanced Veteran Well-being: Through engagement in surf therapy and community activities, veterans have the opportunity to experience improvements in mental health, physical fitness, and social connections, contributing to their overall well-being and successful reintegration into civilian life.
Conclusion: The Oregon Veteran Surfing Project represents a pioneering approach to veteran mental health and community integration. By harnessing the therapeutic potential of surfing and the ocean, coupled with a strong emphasis on building a supportive community, the project offers a valuable resource for veterans seeking healing and connection. This initiative not only highlights the importance of innovative therapeutic options but also underscores the power of community and nature in supporting veterans' journeys toward recovery and resilience.
